Sri Lavapureeswarar Temple, Perugavoor, Madhavaram, Chennai

A very old temple believed to be in existence from the Ramayana period as both the sons of Shri Rama, Lava and Kusha have worshipped this shiva linga when they were in exile along with Sita Devi after she was sent off to the forest by Shri Rama when she was pregnant as per Ramayana.

The current Ambal and moolavar Sannidhi is believed to be over 1500 years. The moolavar Lavapureeswarar is facing east and the moolavar sivalingam is on a grand square Avudayar and is really beautiful to see specially during Abhishekam.

Ambal was earlier called Sri Maragadhambikai and later has been changed to Sri Thripurasundari, but reasons are not known as to why this change was done. She is in a separate Sannidhi and just on the left of Shivan Sannidhi facing east, which represents the Kalyanam kolam.

The inner praharam has Navagrahm Sannidhi also. We can see 63 Nayanar Vigraham. Both swamy and Ambal ghostam has beautiful Vigrahams and looks like has been constructed very much according to the earlier agama sasthras.

Sri Agastheeswarar Temple, Alathur, Thiruporur

A beautiful temple in the middle of a village called Alathur which is 4 kms away from Thiruporur. The temple looks to be atleast 1000years old which seems to have had a big granite compound right around the temple. The temple has a big tank right opposite. Swamy is facing east and in the outer praharam you have a separate Sannidhi for Akhilandeswari facing south. There seems to be other Sannidhi around but all seems to be in ruins now.

The legend says that while Murugan waged the war against Tharakasuran his body fell while the war was on the sky. Aalu in Tamil means man so as the body of Thatakasuran fell here hence  it’s called Alathur. Similarly the surrounding areas also have got their names according to the legend. The thanduvadam or the backbone fell at Thandalam, the head Thalai fell at Thaiyur etc.

There is jeshta Devi Vigram here which shows the antiquity of this place.

Contact: This temple opens daily no specific timing and the kurukal Sri Kadhirvel can be reached on 6382377441 for any puja related enquiries
