Sri Villeeswarar temple, Idikarai, Coimbatore

Moolavar: Sri Villeeswarar

Amman: Sri Vedhanayagi Amman

Idikarai is around 16 Kms from Coimbatore city on the Mettupalayam Road. The place is situated between two streams coming down from the nearby hills.  As it is between two Karais ( banks ) of the streams, it was called Iru Karai which later became Idikarai.  The temple is that of Sri Vedanayaki sametha Sri Villeeswarar ( Villeswarara Paramudayar ).  There are number of epigraphic evidences in the form of inscriptions confirming the antiquity of this ancient temple.

There are three temples in close proximity.  They are in a straight line- this temple, Shri Kalakaleswarar of Kovilpalayam and Shri Virundeeswarar of Vadamadurai.Hence worshipping in all these three temples in a single day, is considered very auspicious.  The same king- Karikalan- constructed all these three temples and there is an underground passage linking all the three.  This was used by the King during the war times.

Sri Rama is believed to have worshipped this Lord and was blessed with the Holy Bow ( Vil in Tamil ).  Hence He is called Villeeswarar.  The presence of Shri Kodandaramar temple in the nearby Govindanaickenpalayam further confirms this legend.    There is another legend that this Lord was worshipped by the hunter community whose main weapon was Vil.  This gives rise to the name of the Lord as Villeeswarar.

The construction of these temples by Karikalan commenced after the soothsaying by a Gypsy Lady so that the kingdom would flourish and the illness of the King’s sons cured.   This is believed to be the 29th out of the 36 temples constructed by him.  The temple was constructed after clearing the land full of Vilwa trees.  Durga who was occupying this place demanded her sacrifices.  The King agreed to this demand and gave a cock, goat and swine, after constructing the Shiva temple.

The Lord is a Swayambumurthy on whose forehead there are three straight lines ( like the Vibhuthi pattais ).  There is a small Nandi in front of the Lord.  The rays of the Sun fall on the Lingam between 14th and 16th of Tamil month Panguni ( Mar-Apl ).  The Navagrahams are installed just a foot above the ground level which is rather unusual.  Devotees write their requests on pieces of paper and submit to the planets.  They believe that their problems are taken care of within 30 days.

Mother Vedanayaki is housed in a separate shrine. Instead of simham she got Nandhi infront of her which is unique here.

Arulmigu Avinashilingeswarar Temple, Avinashi

The Avinashi temple is believed to be the first among the seven shivastalams of Kongunadu. It is also known as the Karunaiyaathaal temple. The temple's construction is connected to a legend based on Sundaramurthi Nayanar. The 'Moovendargal' Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas have made huge bequest to this Temple.

The Tamil saying goes – Kasiyil Vasi Avinashi meaning that what the devotee derives by worshipping in Kasi-Varanasi, he/she derives half of the benefits by worshipping Avinashi Lingeswara in Avinashi. Lord Avinashi Appar, Lord Bhairava and the holy water-Theertham- are brought from Kasi. Bathing in the Kasi well in the temple on new moon day-Amavasya brings manifold benefits to the devotee. There will be no interval closing of the temple on new moon days. Vinasam in Sanskrit or Tamil means perishable. Avinashi means imperishable.

The inner corridors on the four sides of the sanctum sancotrum are decorated with the images of Nayanmars, Murugan Sannidhi in the northwest and Karaiakal Ammaiar Sannidhi on the northeast.

The shrine of Goddess Karunambikai (consort of Avinashi Lingeswarar) is seen separately and is located on the right side of the presiding deity. It is located in the southern side of the temple corridor. The front mandapam of Goddess Karunambikai shrine has carvings of figures like the elegant and beautiful Kurathi or her more rugged male counterpart Kuravan, which arrests the attention of everybody entering this shrine. At the back of the shrine is carved a figure of scorpion, which is said to have the efficacy to cure a person, from even the bite of a venomous snake and sting of scorpions. The Kala Bhairava shrine of this temple has a special status.

Legend:
Sundaramurthi Nayanar was passing through the town of Avinashi on his way to meet Cheraman Peruman. While going along a street he observed two houses overlooking each other. He couldn't help but notice the contradictory auras emitting from both houses: one of joy and the other of sorrow. Enquiring about the event he came to know the reason behind the incongruity. Two boys, of the same age went for a swim in a river nearby. While they were having their bath a crocodile appeared all of a sudden out of nowhere and consumed one of them. Sage Sundarar immediately went to the temple and demanded the Lord to direct the crocodile to give back the boy it swallowed three years ago when he was four. He prayed to Lord with a Pathigam (10 verses).

As he sang the fourth stanza begging the Lord to direct the crocodile to return the boy, to the joy of all around him, the crocodile brought back the boy with the growth he would have at the age of seven.

Sundarar took the boy to the parents and arranged his Upanayanam too. This is a great event related with this temple.

During the Panguni Uthiram festival in March-April, Mudalai Vai Pillai – boy in the grip of the crocodile – Utsav is celebrated for three days.

Sri Sangameswarar Temple, Kottaimedu, Coimbatore

Moolavar: Sri Sangameswarar
Amman: Sri Akilandeswari
Place: Kottaimedu, Coimbatore

Chola king Karikala was harbouring the grief of not having heir to succeed him to the throne. He had a dream on a day about the miracles Lord Shiva in various places. He spoke to his Guru and scholars about the dream he had and believed that it could also grant him a child boon. As advised by them, he built 36 Shiva temples. This is the 31st temple built by Karikala.

A demon performed severe penance on Lord Shiva and attained powerful boons that he could not be killed by any. Aiming to rule the Deva Loka (celestial world), he began to harass them and the sages. When they approached Indira for safety, he told them that Lord Shiva alone could save them. They came to this place which was full of Sangu pushpam flower plants and prayed Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva killed the demon.

The lines of Brahmma Sutra are written on the head of the Shivalinga. Hence prayer to him will save people from adverse destinies and even bring back life of the younger people facing their end.
