Sri Ooraneeshwarar Temple, Urappakkam, Chennai

Moolavar: Sri Poornambikai
Amman: Sri Poornambikai

The name Sri Ooraneeswarar has come because in tamil, reptiles are called ooranai and as they have worshipped this Shiva lingam called Ooraneeswarar and the place hence became Oorapakkam (later spelt Urappakkam). The sivalingam is very beautiful and has a square Avudayar signifying that siddhars must have installed it in those days. Swamy here is facing west which is very auspicious and even the new temple is getting constructed facing west only.

It is said that the sivalingam alone is over 1500 years old and was found under a tamarind tree way back in late 90s when the roads were not as big as they are now. After that a small make shift arrangements were made on a temporary basis and daily puja is being performed since 23 years now. The temple is on the GST main  road in Urappakkam.

As days went by they have added other parihara vigrahams like Pillayar, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramania swamy, Ambal Poornambikai. Chandikeswarar, Mahavishnu, Vishnu Durgai and Dhakshinamoorthy alone is found in the outer circle.

Since last 23 years the new temple construction is still going on without any support from the government or the HR&CE department and purely on the funds collected by devotees.

Temple has got rare photo of Idaikadar siddar (whose venba is in all tamil panchangam ) a separate Sannidhi is there for Anjaneyar as well Navagrahas.

Timing: The temple opens by 6 am
