Sri Karkadeswarar Temple, Kalivanthapattu, Maraimalai Nagar, Guduvancheri

Moolavar: Sri Karkadeswarar

Amman: Sri Karkadanayagi Ambal

A very old Shivalingam and dates are unknown as to which period the lingam belongs to.

According to the legend sidhars kakabhujandar and bhogar prayed to lord shiva to destroy the demons named Vilvan and Vathai. Even all devas insisted that the 2 demons has to be killed to safeguard dharna. So it is said  that lord shiva took a form of a 16 year old young valored Vanniyar and fought with the demons.

The demon Vilvan got killed but Vathapi took a form of Crab (Nandu or Karkada) and hid himself in the fish  nets. Lord shivan pulled him out of the nets and killed him. When he was killed he turned into a flash of light and got merged with the lord and asked for a boon.

Based on that boon it is said that lord took the form of Karkadeswarar and stayed in this place. So it is said that if people take bath in the temple tank here and worship Sri Karkadeswarar all the dhosham formed from Kali will be removed.

A King named Sambuga has done lot of contributions to this temple and also in later years Pallavas too have renovated the temple. Today the old temple is completely erased with time and a new temple has been built around the Shivalingam and a new Sannidhi for Ambal Karkadanayagi was installed.

Daily one kala puja is performed as early at 5:30 am in the morning
