A 12th century temple built by the Pallavas and is at the east entrance to the main Kanchipuram city. It is said that right around the existing Kanchipuram main city the pallavas have built 4 Kailasanathar Temple including the famous one which is under the Archaeological department. Ayyampettai, Sevallimedu, Govindavadi and Pillayarpalayam

The temple faces east and has a 5-tier Rajagopuram.

Veerabhadra and Nandi are found in the koshtas inside the Rajagopuram. The Moolavar is situated on a round avudaiyar.  The koshtams has Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durga. The outer praharam has Annapoorani sannidhi

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and mukha mandapam.

The mukha mandapam pillars showcase beautiful bas-reliefs of various deities and mythological figures.

The temple is situated on the banks of the Palar River, which flows from south to north, making it a holy place equivalent to Kashi.Devotees can offer worship to Shiva, considering him as Kashi Viswanathar.
