A very beautiful old temple and believed to be one of the Pancharanya Thalam located in and around Chennai and Thiruvallur. 

Temples surrounded by forest are usually called Aranyam thalam or Kaatu Thalam. Accordingly Chennai and Thiruvallur is sorrounded by 5 Aranya Tham or Kattu Thalam, those are - 

Thiruvalangadu (Alangadu), 

Tirupasur (bamboo forest),

Poondi (Ilantaikadu) known as Tiruvenpakkadu

Tiruvilkolam (Darpaikadu) and

Eekadu (Echangadu

All these 5 kshetrams are revered as Pancharanya Thalam. Among these, except Ekkadu Talam, others fall under Devar Padal Petra sthalam. 

Perhaps, even Eekadu temple also must have been praised in the Padhikam and traces could not be found yet. However, Ekkadu has the same mythological significance as the other padal petra sthalam around.

Lord Shiva, who graces the sanctum sanctorum of this temple, appears in five colors in the early morning, mid morning, noon, afternoon and evenings and showers his blessings to all.

The mythology around this temple says that when Kubera poured nectar from the amrita kalasa in his hand, a Shiva linga drenched in nectar emerged from that place. All the gods including Kubera worshiped it. According to the legend, the Lord accepted their request and appeared at this place.

Bhogar, one of the eighteen Siddhars, is believed to have mixed Navapashanam on this shivalingam and drinking the abhishekam water or milk poured on to this lingam would cure inexhaustible pain.

Sri Uthandeeswara swamy Tenple, Uthandi, ECR, Chennai

 

Moolavar: Sri Uthandeeswara swamy

Amman: Sri Meenakshi Ambal

A very recent temple and is believed to be built over 35 years ago on the main road of ECR. The praharam has two main Sannidhies one for Sri Rajaganapathi and one for  Sri Meenakshi Ambal Samedha Sri Uthandeeswara swamy. The moolavar Uthandeedwarar is along with Meenakshi Ambal in the same Sannidhi next to each other.

The temple is facing west and very well maintained and is very clean. The Rajaganapathi Sannidhi ghostam has Vignaganapathi, Bala Ganapathy and Yoga Ganapathy with dhandam in one hand. Swamy ghoshtam has Durgai, Mahavishnu and Dhakshinamoorthy.

Sri Agastheeswarar Temple, Vengudi, Kanchipuram

Amman: Sri Kamakshi Ambal

A good 1500 years old temple believed to be built during the Pallava period and in later years been renovated during  the Vijayanagara Nayaka Period.

It is said that the shivalingam was installed by sage Agasthiar and has been worshipped by many siddhars like pambatti siddhar, Kurangani siddhar and are to the day believed to be visiting and worshiping the moolavar in sukshuma roopam.

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. Some of the salient features of this temple are, The temple is facing east with a temple tank on the north side. There is an entrance arch on the north side. The balipeedam and Nandhi are in front of the Temple. The entrance to the sanctum is from south with a mukha mandapam. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durgai. In prakaram Chandikeswarar, Vinayagar, Bhairavar, Navagrahas, Chandran, Suryan, Nagar, Siddhars Agasthiyar, Dhyanalinga and Pambatti Siddhar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar ( in the form of bas-relief on a flat stone ). Ambal Sri Kamakshi is in a separate Sannadhi, facing east.

The temple opens daily in the morning and one kala pujai is performed.

Sri Paanjaleeswarar Temple, Paanjalapattu, Sriperumbudur

Amman: Sri Parvathambigai

A beautiful temple in the village of Paanjalapattu, it is said that many years ago a small sivalingam and a small Nandhi was being worshiped by a brahmin for generations and after he crossed over 100 years of age had given the lingam to the current family here who has built a temple now. 

The small sivalingam is under the main shivalingam now and the small Nandhi can still be seen in front of the main Nandhi. 

They also told an instance that during a heavy rainy day lightning hit the temple and the sudhai Vigram of swamy on top of the main mandapam took the hit of the lightning but with just a small hole in the arch nothing happened to anyone or anything to the temple. It’s really a miracle and you can still witness the small hole in the arch above the sudhai vigraham on the mahamandapam.

Sri Vaali-sera Paleeswarar Temple, Alapakkam, Porur, Chennai

 

Moolavar: Sri Vaali-sera Paleeswarar 

Amman: Sri Valli-sera Paleeswari

This temple is said to belong to 10th century pallava period .The Shiva lingam was discovered under the ground in 1994 and kumbabishekam was done as per the guidance of Maha periyava of Kanchi. 

The history goes on to say that while lord Murugan was going to meet Valli in vallimalai, ambal helped him by showing the way and hence she is named as Valli-sera Paleeswari and the moolavar was worshipped by King Vaali and hence he is called Vaali-sera Paleeswarar. The old temple has been renovated now and a nice praharam is well maintained. A very unique thing is that you can see Garudar, Anjaneyar and Shanka Chakra on the dhwajasthmbam in a shiva temple. Signifying that Shiva Vaishnava coexistence in those years.

The other sannidis are there and Ayappan Sannidhi is very beautifully made. There is also a Sannidhi for Sri Rama Seetha Lakshmana and Anchaneyar .
