A good 1000 years old temple believed to be built during the Pallava period and oldest temple of all in Padiyanallur, the name Padiyanallur for this village came because, one of the Nayanmar has sung a song in this temple. Hence the name Padiyanallur came for this village.
The name Thiruneetreshwarar has come as lord shiva after killing asuras has applied the ashes on his body and Thiruneer is the name for scared ashes and that’s how he got the name Thiruneetreshwarar.
It is said during the month of puratasi for initial few days sun rays directly fall at the feet of shivalingam here and this has been even written in Agasthyar Naadi a form of astrology.
It is also said that Agasthiar has sat in this temple has given upadesam to his devotees here.
