The Sivalingam, swayambu, was said to have been worshipped by Sri Krishna, Subramanya, Pandavas and Bharadwaja Rishi. Legend has it that a pepper trader offered worship to the lingam. He would take rest under a Manipunga tree. On such occasions he noticed that herds of cows came and showered milk on the lingam.
