Sri Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Perunagar, Kancheepuram

A beautiful temple believed to be built by a small regional king Villi Thirikaththarayan under Kadava / Pallava King  KoperunSingan ( 1250 AD), the inscription is not mentioning any year. So it was concluded that the temple was constructed before 13th Century. There are 33 inscriptions  in Tamil and Grantam are inscribed in this temple. The inscriptions belongs to Pandyas, Kerala Kulasekara Pandyan, Maravarman Kulasekaran, Sundarapandiyan-iv, Kadavar King KoperunSingan, Chozha King Rajarajan-II, Kulothungan-III, Rajarajan-III, Sambuvarayas.. Vikrama Chozha Sambuvarayar, and Vijayanagaras, Hariharan-II, Virupakshar, Bhoopathy Rayar, Viraprathaba pukka Maharayar, Krishna Deva Maharayar, Achuthadeva maharayar, Sadhasiva maharayar.

The temple is being called as Brameesar Koil, on the north east corner of the village. Originally this place was called as Brahmanagar ( Brahma worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple ) and latter it turned to the present name of Perunagar. 

As per the inscription this place was called as Nithavinotha Chathurvedhimangalam, Perunagar  and Iraivan was called as Perunagar Nattu Perunagar Aludayar Biramiswararmudaya Nayanar, Bramiswaramudaya Mahadevar Perarularar Koyil, The Inscriptions mainly speaks about gift made to this temple in terms, of money Gold, Land, towards  burning of perpetual lamps, supplying of flower, ghee, Oil, Milk to this temple.

The Sanctum is of semicircular shape, up to prastaram. sanctum was built with stone ( light  Green Colour ) and Vimana is of Gajabrushta Vimana, built with brick and mortar. 

The special feature of the temple is the shrine of Lord Maha Bhairava in the northeast corner of the inner prakara made of a green stone. In the third round of the prakara are the eight serpents – Anandan, Vasuki, Dakshakan, Karkodagan, Sangan,Padman, Mahapadman and Kuligan. This belongs to theThoonganai Mada temple category with three Kalasas on the Vimana – tower above the sanctum Sanctorum.

Ambal Pattuvadhana Ambikai graces from a separate shrine.12 Vinayakas adore the pillars of the mandap. Besides the 8 serpents-Ashta Nagas-there are shrines in the third prakara for Lord Brahmma, Nandhideva, Kottravai , Lord Vallabha Vinayaka, Saptha Kannikas, 63 Nayanmars, Maha Ganapathi, Muruga with six faces, Vishnu and Dakshinamurthi.There is also a shrine for Jeshta Devi.
