Moolavar: Sri Maakaleswarar

A beautiful temple that belongs to Pallava period and the same was reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period. An inscription without King's name records that the temple was (re)constructed as a stone temple by Sattan.
As per the inscription this place was called as Pazhanaiyur under Maduranthaka Chaturvedi mangalam in Jayangonda Chozha mandalam.

Many inscriptions are found here from the Rajadhiraja –II’s, Kulottungachola- I’s, Rajaraja- I’s, Rajarajan – III’s and The Vijayanagara period 17th Century inscription records are also found. A treasure of information around the contributions by all the kings towards this temple can be seen.

The origin of Mahakaleshwar goes to the story of  Dakshayani, daughter of Daksha entered in to fire to protest against her father, Daksha, who objected to invite lord Shiva to a maha yagam that he was performing. He had invited all the devas except Lord Shiva just to insult him. So Dhakshayani went to confront her father for his wrong doing and as he disrespected her and Shiva together, she entered the fire that was burning in the yagasalai to stop the yagam itself. This made Lord Shiva furious, and this is when he performed the thandava, the Cosmic Dance, after which he was known as the Mahakaleshwar ( Kala - Yama ), or the one who is mightier and ahead of time itself.

According to another legend, the demon Dushan, attacked our Shaiva bhakts, then Lord Shiva tore the earth in half in a fit of rage, and this is when he manifested as Mahakaleshwar.

The temple is facing east with an old Rajagopuram pillar. Mahakali and Vinayagar sannidhis are on both sides of the Pillars. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the mandapam and a hole is provided in front of Rishabam on the wall. The entrance to the ardha mandapam is through the maha mandapam. Bramendra’s sannidhi, Saptamatrikas, Mahishamardini, Arumugar with Sri Valli Devasena, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar and Amman are in the maha mandapam. Moolavar in the sanctum is on a round avudayar. In Koshtam, Tripurantahkar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Siva Durgai. The Vimana is constructed as a Gajaprishta Vimana from, adhistanam to Stupi. An Ekatala vimanam is on the prastaram.
