Sri Puniyakodeeswarar Temple, Kottaikuppam, Thiruvallur

Moolavar: Sri Puniyakodeeswarar

Amman: Sri Annapoorani Ambal

A very old shiva temple believed to be worshipped by Barghava Rishi and Parashara Rishi. The Vijayanagar empire has done lot of Thirupani for this temple. You can still see the image of the king and the queen on the pillar close to Ambal Sannidhi.

The history goes like, when Bhargava and Parashara Maharishi were going to Kasi they passed through this village which is actually an island formed by the river Kosasthalai and stopped for their Sandhya Vandhanam. As there was no temple here, they installed the present Shivalingam and worshipped here in this village. It is said that they lived here for sometime and set all pujas for the swamy and then moved on with their Kasi Yatra.

You can see both their Vigram here on the south side of the outer praharam.

In later years, the Vijayanagar kings have done renovation and also have installed the Ambal Annapoorani here. Every year for the first 3 days of the tamil new year month of Chithirai the sun directly enters the grabhagraham and worships the moolavar sri Punyakodeeswarar.
