A beautiful 9th Century Pallava period temple in the temple town of Kanchi. The original temple belongs to 8th to 9th Century Pallava period and may be reconstructed during Chozha's and Vijayanagara's period.
It is believed that ashta Bhairavas or the eight forms of Bairavan have worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Devotees worships Ashta Bhairavas on theipirai Ashtami day to get their wishes fulfilled.
The eight Bairavas are
Samhara Bhairava with Dog as vahanam
Asitanga Bhairava with Swan as vahanam
Viduvacha vaneswarar - Chanda Bhairava with Peacock as vahanam
Ruru Bhairavar with bull as vahanam
Krotha Bhairava with Eagle as vahanam
Unmatta Bhairava with Horse as vahanam
Kapala Bhairava with elephant as vahanam and
Beeshana Bhairava with Lion as vahanam
All these ashta bairavas are in the linga form in this temple
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch with a Shiva and Parvati sudhai murthy on the entrance. Moolavar Soleeswarar is of Dhara Lingam and a beautiful huge shivalingam and he is also called as Samhara Bhairavar. You can see the relics of Ambal and swamy on the back side wall of Sanctum sanctorum.

As most of the shiva temples in Kanchipuram, here too there is no separate Ambal Sannidhi and referred as Kamakshi as the consort for all shiva temples in and around Kanchi.
