It is said that the Shiva Linga is found in Mullai (Jasmine) creepers when a king cleared the creepers which twisted the feet of his elephant. The king installed the Shiva Linga and by the grace of Lord Shiva he was successful in the war. This is the 21st of the 32 Tevara Stalams in the Tondai region of South India. It is considered special to worship Shri Kodiyidai Nayaki here and Shri Vadivudai Nayaki at Tiruvotriyur on full moon days. The sanctum here has been in worship since the Sangam period.
