Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple, Guduvancheri

Moolavar: Sri Vedagiriswarar
Amman: Sri Tiripura Sundari
Place: Kumizhi, Nallambakkam

Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple was constructed at Kumizhi by a king of the Pallava dynasty, including a Siva Lingam within its premises. Over the course of time, the temple was overgrown with vines and plants of various kinds, giving it the appearance of a ruin, and the temple was lost to the people of the region.

A Brahmin living in this village was suffering from severe illness, making it impossible for him to leave his home. He was extremely worried about not being able to arrange for the marriages of his three young daughters before his death. A traveler who happened to pass through the village, a devotee of Siva, saw the Brahmin's pitiable state, and informed him of Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple that was hidden in the midst of the forest nearby. He told the Brahmin to pray to Sri Vedagiriswarar at the temple, bathe in the temple tank known as "Saroni Thadaagam", and apply its mud on his body. The Brahmin proceeded to do accordingly, and within a few weeks a miracle occurred. The serious illness the Brahmin had suffered from disappeared without a trace, and he began to glow with health. Soon the marriages of his three young daughters also got arranged, and the Brahmin was filled with happiness at having fulfilled his duty towards them. As he began to sing the praises of Sri Vegagiriswarar Temple, the people of the region became aware of the amazing healing powers of the "Saroni Thadaagam", and they flocked in droves to apply its mud on their bodies and become healed of their diseases.

Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple was rediscovered by Mr. Vasu in a dream. With the grace of Lord Siva, he has worked hard to repair the temple at considerable expense to himself, and successfully restored the temple to its lost glory.

The temple tank known as "Saroni Thadaagam" is filled with cool water that does not dry up even in the height of summer. With sweet water in the temple tank, beautiful natural surroundings of dense forest, a peaceful environment that fills devotees' hearts with divine thoughts, a view of three mountains around the temple, a cool medicinal breeze blowing at all times, an endless water spring that quenches the thirst of devotees, a statue of Sri Vedagiriswarar in the form of a Siva Lingam in the sanctum sanctorum, a temple of Sri Thiripura Sundari beside it, and the cool shade of trees such as Vilva Maram and Vanni Maram, this temple at Kumizhi is indeed a pilgrimage site that no devotee of Lord Siva should miss visiting at least once in a lifetime.
