Moolavar: Sri Malleegeshwarar
Amman: Sri Malleegeshwari Ambal
Place: Mahabalipuram, Chennai
This temple was initially built by the cholas and later when the pallavas came to power the Vaishnavites at that time broke the Avudayar and threw the lingam into the lake. For many years the Avudayar was under garbage here and pigs would be sleeping on it. Later one person saw the plight of this temple and had lodged a court case to get a new Avudayar done as the old avudayar was broken. Later 2 stapadhis came to measure the lingam with a tape and ended up breaking their hands as the lord doesn’t want to be measured. Later the judge directly had come here and saw the temple and ordered to use the old Avudayar itself without changing it and imposed 10 lakhs fine on those who had tried to impose cases on this temple.
It’s belived that visiting this temple on amavasai helps in removing all graha dhosahams. And during Marghazhi amavasai a snake comes inside the grabhagram and removes its skin and also it’s said it visits regularly during night time.
This temple is located next to the most historical place in Mahabalipuram which is known for the Rock carving and the famous butter ball rock. The Temple faces east. Temple small in size. No Rajagopuram, but kodimaram is present.
Ambal Mallegeshwari is facing south and you have beautiful stone elephants next to the Kodimaram. On the ghostam Sri Dhakshinamurthy’s vigraham is worth seeing for its beauty and really shows the ancient carvings skills of those years.
