Sri Murugeeswarar Temple, Kelambakkam

Moolavar: Sri Murugeeswarar
Amman: Sri Maragadhambikai
Place: Kelambakkam

The actual name of lord has been Azhagiya Sokkanathar and Devi as Maragathavalli. Later days it has changed to Murugeeswarar.

A nice temple to the south west of Kelambakkam and to the west of Senkanmal(eswara temple). The drive to the temple is amazing with lovely greenery and rural settting. Hundred of cows greet you on the way. Temple is said to be more than 2000 years but the present structure could probably belong to the Chola period. Evidence of Chola patronage to this temple (alongwith six others of this region) is apparently available in the Saraswathi Mahal Library, Thanjavur

There are very interesting Statues dating 9th Century. To mention the Vinayagar here does not have a tummy like usual and very uniquely he has a Radish in his hand. The lord Muruga here is a replica of Thiruporur Kandhaswamy, showing the connectivity of both temples. The kalabyravar has around 9 serpents on his body.

The carvings on the outer Praharam is really amazing and has very astonishing figures of Chines and Mangol figures. Shows the relationship of the pallavas with the outer countries thousands of years ago.
