This is one of the ancient shiva temples in the Aathur village close to Chengalpet. Sri Paneeswarar is belived to remove obstacles for marriage as well as child birth. Many devotees come and pray here to either get married or those couples without a child pray here to get a child.
Interesting fact is that this temple is surrounded by six other old Shiva temples and they are -
Sri Muktheeswarar
Sri Jalangdeeswarar
Sri Swarnapureeswarar
Sri Muthupureeswarar
Sri Aadhilingeswarar
Sri Kilingeeswarar
The stone incription found in Sri Muktheeswarar temple has the details of this temple and it shows it’s been 1200 years old. The sivalingam is swayambu lingam and the Avudayar is similar to that of Ekambareswarar temple in Kanchi. There is no Ambal Sannidhi yet and apparently the Ambal vigraham seems to below the ground yet to be excavated nearby.
One Sri Rhagavaiya the person who has taken up all the 7 temples and have built them and have done Kumbhabhishekam to all the 6 temples and 7th one is pending.
Regularly a sarpam visits during pradhosham and goes to Muktheeswarar as well.
