A Pallava period temple and believed to have been constructed 1300 years ago and during 14th Century.The temple is facing east with Dwajasthambam, Palipedam and nandhi and separate sannadhi for Sri Maha Ganapathy, Sri Anjaneyar, Maha Prithiyangara devai, Sarabeswarar, Sri Kasi Viswanathar & Visalakshi and Bairavar.
In the inner prakaram sannadhi for Sakthi Ganapathy, Shiva Lingam, Gajalakshmi, Veerabathirar, Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Astothara Lingam, Maha sarasvathy, 63 nayanmar Swarna Akarshna Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan and a mandapam. In koshtam Niruthiya Ganapathy, Dhakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu ( in place of Lingothbavar), Brahma and Durgai.
Moolavar looks beautiful in Nagaabarana kavasam. Ambal is in a separate temple like sannadhi with koshtam. In koshtam Maaheswsri Vaarahii, Brahmani & Narayani.
There is a under ground passage and it is believed that it goes to Thirumullaivayil in Thiruvotriyur.
Sundarar and Thirumoolar worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple (Hence called as Thirumoolanathar). Agasthiyar had seen Lord Shiva’s kalyana kolam in the Shiva Lingam.
