Sri Agatheeswarar Temple, Chithalapakkam

Moolavar: Sri Agatheeswarar
Amman: Sri Angammal
Place: Chithalapakkam, Chennai

The temple belongs to Pallavas time and is close to 1000 years old. This is a small temple probably rebuilt over a ruined temple. The last kumbhabhishekam was performed over 20 years ago. As the Shiva Lingam was worshipped by Sage Agasthiar the lord is called Agastheeswarar.

A very unique Ganesha statue is found here where you can see his neck bent and called Vathapi Ganapathy.

As this lord was worshiped by Rishis and Siddhars long ago this place was called Siddhargal Pakkam (meaning a place where Sidhas live) which in due course has become Chithalapakkam.

It is beloved that the lord has promised to protect this place from all natural calamities and to date this place has not been affected by any natural calamities. During pournami the moon light directly. The Avudayar is square signifying that sidhargal have worshipped and installed this sivalingam.
There is an old Agasthya Idol in the temple premises. A big Peepal tree with branches quite long extending to all sides and a damaged sculpture of Devi points to existence of a big old temple. There is a tank adjacent to the temple which needs good maintenance.

The Temple is located at about 100 meters from Sithalapakkam Government School Bus Stop, 4 Kms from Medavakkam

The temple currently is under renovation and opens by 6:30 am.
